Getting Giggles and Grins: How I Get Little Clients in the Mood for a Photoshoot
Let’s be real – asking a toddler to “smile naturally” is like asking a cat to take a bubble bath. It might happen… but not without a little (okay, a lot of) charm and magic during Kids photography .
As a children’s photographer, one of the most frequent questions I get from parents:
How do you get my kids to cooperate during a photoshoot?
The secret? I don’t expect cooperation—I invite fun. That’s where the magic begins.
Whether I’m shooting a squirmy 2-year-old in a sun-drenched field or holiday photos, or a too-cool 9-year-old in the studio, my goal is the same: make it fun, make it personal, and meet them where they are.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes peek at how I get those heart-melting smiles and real-deal giggles:
How to Get Toddlers in the Mood for a Photoshoot?
Start With a Game, not a Pose
Before we even think about “say cheese,” we play. I’ll often start with a silly game of Simon Says, a mini scavenger hunt, or a quick round of “Freeze Dance” to get the wiggles out. As a result, kiddos feel like the photoshoot is a playdate—not a performance.
Give Them a Job
“Can you help me test my camera by making the funniest face you’ve got?”
“Can you find the best leaf for me or is there a froggy that want to be in the photos?”
One of my favorite ways to get kids in the mood for a photoshoot is by giving them a fun little mission. Consequently, it gives them purpose and confidence!

Surprise Props & Studio Magic for Kids Photography
In the studio, I keep a stash of bubbles, puppets (say hello to Mr. Pickles, the camel), and even a few peekaboo curtains just for toddlers. Additionally, I stay prepared with their favorite song playlist, like the ‘Baby Shark’ on my phone, or popular children’s books. Surprisingly, a little hidden magic goes a long way in keeping their attention focused (and their giggles flowing).

For the Big Kids Photography (Ages 4–10):
Here’s where things get really fun — because big Kids photography come with big personalities, and I absolutely love tapping into what makes them shine.
Let Their Passions Lead the Way
Want to know a surefire way to get a kid excited about a photoshoot? Ask them about their thing. Whether it’s LEGO masterpieces (yes, I had a little guy proudly bring his entire collection to a session!), favorite books, dance moves, or their prized Pokémon cards — if it lights them up, I’m here for it.

In fact, bringing personal items to a session doesn’t just help them feel comfortable, it tells their story. And those are the moments that parents treasure forever.

Dress-Up Dreams

For girls especially, showing off pretty dresses or fairy wings can feel like the best day ever. I’ll often say, “Want to do a little model twirl?” or “Let’s pretend we’re in a fairytale,” and the confidence just blooms.
(And let’s be honest—boys love costumes too. Superhero capes, cool jackets, silly sunglasses… yes please.)
Studio Edition: How to Set the Mood for a Photoshoot Indoors
In studio sessions Kids photography , I sometimes let kids “help” with lights or hold a reflector (safely, of course!). Feeling like part of the crew gives them a sense of ownership over the session. Plus, they love it when I show them how they look on the back of the camera—it’s a little sneak peek that makes them excited to keep going.

My Not-So-Secret Weapons for Children Photography:
- Ridiculous Noises (yes, even for 10-year-olds—don’t underestimate the power of a fake fart sound)
- Funny Jokes (“What do you call a bear with no teeth? A gummy bear!” …cue laughter or at least a generous eye-roll)
- Letting Them Teach Me Something (“Wait, how do you build that LEGO ship again?”— they’re in charge now, and they love it.)
At the end of the day, it’s not just about smiling, it’s about connection. My job isn’t just to take photos; it’s to help kids feel seen, heard, and celebrated. Whether they’re shy or wild, artsy or sporty, every child brings their own sparkle—and I’m here to capture it.
So don’t worry if your kid is nervous, too silly, too serious, or just wants to talk Minecraft for 30 minutes first. I’ve got time, tricks, and a camera ready to turn this into a memory you’ll never forget.
