Newborn Photography with Siblings

There’s something incredibly sweet about watching older siblings meet and cuddle their brand-new Newborn Photography with Siblings brother or sister. Whether they’re beaming with pride, planting a hesitant kiss, or sneakily inspecting tiny toes, these moments melt your heart, and are totally worth documenting during your newborn session.

But let’s be honest, getting everyone picture-perfect (especially toddlers with a new title of “big brother” or “big sister”) can feel a little daunting. Don’t worry, mama, I’ve got you covered! With a little prep and the right mindset, we’ll create sibling portraits you’ll treasure all your life.

Here are my top tips to help you prepare for a smooth (and dare I say, even fun!) newborn photography session with siblings involved:

1. Dress for Comfort (and Cohesion)

Let’s start with outfits. Because if everyone’s tugging at scratchy clothes or overheating, we’re already losing the battle.

  • Keep it neutral and soft: Think whites, creams, taupes, dusty blues, or blush pinks. These tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on faces, not fashion.
  • Coordinate, don’t match: Avoid identical outfits and instead choose colors and textures that flow together.
  • Barefoot is beautiful: Especially in studio or in-home sessions, barefoot siblings give a natural, cozy feel.

If you’re unsure what works best, I’m always happy to help you pull from my curated client wardrobe (yep, we’ve got sizes for babies, toddlers, and mamas!).

2. Prepare the Big Sibling before newborn session (or Siblings!)

Going from the “only child” to “big brother” or “big sister” is a BIG deal. Some older siblings are smitten from the get-go. Others need a little warm-up, and that’s perfectly normal.

Here are a few ways you can help set them up for success:

  • Talk it up ahead of time: Let them know they’ll be taking special photos with their baby brother or sister.
  • Keep expectations light: Avoid phrases like “you have to smile” or “you have to hold the baby.” Instead, frame it as something fun and optional.
  • Bring bribes (we won’t judge!): Small, non-messy treats (like fruit snacks, marshmallows, lollypops, or M&Ms) can work wonders. I’m also not above a sticker chart or a surprise toy reveal at the end.
  • Bring a favorite toy or lovey: Not only does this help them feel more secure, but it can sometimes sneak into a photo with a sweet personal touch.

And if all else fails? We pivot. Sometimes the best Newborn Photography with Siblings shots happen when we don’t ask for a pose but instead capture a curious glance or gentle touch.

3. Involving Younger Siblings (Ahem, Toddlers!)

Toddlers are adorable, unpredictable, and often more interested in jumping off the couch than snuggling a newborn. But don’t worry, I’m fluent in toddler and have a few tricks up my sleeve:

  • We work fast: Younger kiddos have short attention spans, so we prioritize sibling photos early in the session.
  • We play games: I might ask them to “help me count baby’s toes” or whisper a secret to baby. These little prompts make for natural and genuine expressions.
  • We take breaks: If your toddler needs a snack or a breather, that’s totally okay. We’ll never force it as grumpy faces (though funny) aren’t usually what we’re going for.

4. Timing & Expectations: Go with the Flow

The truth? Every session is a little different—and that’s the beauty of it. Some siblings are gentle snuggle bugs from the moment they walk in, and others need time to warm up (or run laps first). That’s why I always build in buffer time, extra patience, and lots of flexibility.

All I ask of you, dear parent, is this: Trust the process. I’m watching for those sweet in-between moments—the quick forehead kiss, the proud smirk, the tender peek. And those, more than any perfectly posed shot, will melt your heart years from now.

Final Thoughts

Bringing siblings into a newborn session adds layers of emotion, legacy, and love. Your babies—no matter how big or small—deserve to be celebrated together. And I promise, with a little prep and a relaxed mindset, we’ll create something truly magical.
